Speiginer Family Start in America

The South Carolina,
……………………The Austrian-German,
…………………………………The African Slave and,
………………………………………………………..The Cherokee Nation connections.

US History
South Carolina is key to where the White Speiginer's started in North America.
Richland County is south-southwest of Charlotte, and 97 miles southeast of Greenville. Northwest Richland County is historically white with the majority of the ancestors coming in or after 1753. Most of the Speiginer's I could find from SC have the spelling of "SPIGENER" and they were the Germans which arrived in 1700's. The Zeigler name is also important since some early records found in the Zeigler Cemetery (Coosada Baptist Church) showed that a Jane E. Zeigler married GEORGE SPIGENER around 1812, in Orangeburg Co, SC.

One of the starting points I researched yielded the following: John George Speigner, arrived on the ship "Elizabeth" at the Port of Charles Town, South Carolina, in January 1753, with his wife Mary and their six children from Austria. This particular Speigner was an Anabaptist Christian or what is called Mennonite. Ship's record shows "Johann George Speigner".

They requested a land grant from King George II of England and the "official" Land Grant was dated: July 4, 1754. The name on the map of the original grant from King George II was John George Spaigner. This reflects the name changes before and after the voyages (i.e., Speigner to Spaigner).
Calhoun County and Lexington County were mostly inhabited by German Lutherans. To increase the population, a bounty system was used 1751-1758. This system resulted in a duty tax on "imported African slaves" where that money was used to pay a bounty to the white Protestants that would move into the area. All of this occurred at the same time as the 1757 "Treaty of Saluda" where the Cherokee gave up their rich land in agreement with "New County Redistricting" and to become under US Government control.... Now notice that once the King of England granted the Cherokee lands to the Europeans the family names again changed to include "Spigener" in SC and "Speigner" in the sister city in AL.

The City of Spigener SC
The city of Spigener was located in Saluda County, SC and was first just German family Speigners. There is a reason why so many Spigener's are found in AL. Spigener SC's sister city is Speigner, Elmore County, AL. Some spell the name "Speigner".

The City of Speigner AL
The city of Speigner is located in Elmore County, AL and uses the spelling/description, "Speigner (GNIS FID: 155252) is a populated place located in Elmore County at latitude 32.584 and longitude -86.345. The elevation of Speigner is 285 feet. Speigner appears on the Elmore U.S. Geological Survey Map. Elmore County is in the Central Time Zone (UTC -6 hours)."

This is the "Spigner" crest (on the left) that is used by the NC Speigner's, et al ….. this raised the possibility of an original spelling of "Spigner" in Germany/Austria. My research found that:

The name "Spigner" is traced back to 1100 AD from the "Westphalia" area of Germany. The name means "mirror" or "to look" or "to see". The possible German alterations include: Spiegel, Spigle, Spiegeler, Spigeler and others.
