Nations, Names and Crests

The European name and crest research

The Names (Speiginer, Speigner, Spigner or Spigener)

Most of the Speiginer's I could find from SC have the spelling of "SPIGENER" and they were the Germans which arrived in 1700's. The Zeigler name is also important since some early records I found from the Zeigler Cemetery (Coosada Baptist Church) showed that a Jane E. Zeigler married GEORGE SPIGENER around 1812 in Orangeburg Co, SC.

This is the "Spigner" crest (on the left) that is used by the NC Speigner's, et al ….. this raised the possibility of an original spelling of "Spigner" in Germany/Austria. My research found that:
The name "Spigner" is traced back to 1100 AD from the "Westphalia" area of Germany. The name means "mirror" or "to look" or "to see". The possible German alterations include: Spiegel, Spigle, Spiegeler, Spigeler and others.

In my continued research on "Spigner", I found that the German records for the crest under this name is represented by the crest on the left. Which one is right? It is like answering which Speiginer spelling is correct… we don't know.

The Native American Nation Crests

Around mid-2005, I found the different information on the Speiginer Crest to be conflicting. With this initial frustration, a shift was made to place more research focus on "American Indian Nation Crests", in honor of our Native American roots. Although there are hundreds of Native American nation crests, the focus was on the two nations of Blackfoot & Cherokee. More research was placed on specific locations in North Carolina or Alabama where it was the most likely to find the origins of the Cherokee Speiginers'.

Here are some of the results researched:
